The Challenge

The industrial sector is heavily dependent on fossil fuels for heating, accounting for 40% of global CO₂ emissions. This reliance, coupled with inefficient heating systems, leads to substantial energy losses and hinders progress towards climate neutrality. Medium-to high-temperature processes, essential in industries like rubber and plastics, offer significant potential for electrification, enabling both emissions reduction and improved energy efficiency. However, challenges such as diverse process and material requirements, along with international competition create barriers to the adoption of clean heating technologies.

How does JOULIA address the dual challenges of decarbonisation and energy efficiency in energy-intensive and process industries?

The Ambition

JOULIA aims to accelerate the energy transition in the industrial sector by demonstrating two innovative electric heating processes that enhance flexibility, energy efficiency, and renewable energy integration. The project will showcase induction and microwave heating technologies for rubber vulcanisation and glue activation in multilayer pipe production, optimised through advanced digital models and process simulations. Key focus areas include health and safety, predictive maintenance, scalability, and replicability, while the project also aims to foster awareness, develop business models, and provide tailored training to support industry adoption.
