SUMMARY:JOULIA Project Kick off meeting in Zaragoza
DESCRIPTION:The JOULIA project officially launched on 21 January 2025 at CIRCE – Centro Tecnológico headquarters in Zaragoza\, Spain. This ambitious initiative\, funded by the Horizon Europe Programme\, aims to revolutionise industrial heating processes\, addressing the dual challenges of decarbonisation and energy efficiency in energy-intensive industries. \nThe industrial sector is responsible for 50% of global heat energy consumption and 40% of CO₂ emissions\, primarily due to its dependence on fossil fuels. Conventional heating systems suffer from inefficiencies and substantial energy losses. As Europe advances towards the targets of the Fit for 55 package\, REPowerEU\, and the Net-Zero Industry Act\, the electrification of industrial processes presents a crucial pathway to sustainability. \nFocusing on medium- to high-temperature processes (100–500 °C) in the rubber and plastics sectors\, JOULIA seeks to integrate clean and renewable energy solutions into industrial heating. \nJOULIA is demonstrating the feasibility and sustainability of fully electrified heating technologies through two key industrial applications: \n\nRubber Vulcanisation: A rotary curing press in Italy will be retrofitted with an induction heating system to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.\nMultilayer Pipe Production: A microwave heating system will replace conventional adhesive activation at a site in Poland\, enhancing precision\, energy efficiency\, and product quality.\n\nBy building upon existing prototypes\, JOULIA will optimise these technologies to increase energy efficiency\, enhance flexibility\, and integrate renewable energy sources. The project will also leverage digital modelling\, process simulations\, and predictive maintenance tools to validate the technologies at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7\, ensuring their safety\, reliability\, and scalability. \nBeyond technological innovation\, JOULIA places a strong emphasis on social and economic impact. The project will contribute to job creation\, worker safety\, and skills development through dedicated training initiatives. Furthermore\, JOULIA aims to establish business models that support sustainable growth and facilitate the long-term adoption of electrified heating solutions. \nThese efforts will not only enable the widespread replication of JOULIA’s technologies across other energy-intensive industries but also deliver economic and environmental benefits on a broader scale. \nThe JOULIA consortium brings together 16 partners from 7 European countries\, encompassing technology developers\, industrial stakeholders\, and leading research institutions. With a total budget of €5.3 million\, the four-year project draws upon a wealth of expertise from previous national and international initiatives. JOULIA also actively engages with key industry associations\, including Process4Planet\, the Alliance of Energy Intensive Industries\, and the European Microwave Association. \nBy fostering collaboration and innovation\, JOULIA is set to drive meaningful change in industrial heating\, advancing energy-efficient manufacturing while supporting Europe’s decarbonisation goals. \nStay updated on JOULIA’s progress by following our latest developments and milestones!
